Character Name; Ciel Phantomhive
Series/Fandom; “Kuroshitsuji” (“Black Butler”)
Paradisim Address: Business District, Apartment 1 Floor 3, Hachi
Appearance; At the tender age of fifteen, the Queen’s guard dog is still no more than a puppy in appearance. Even in his wooden heels, he is barely over 5 feet tall, and his delicate bone structure doesn’t help make him look any more intimidating. In fact, with his soft, slate-gray hair and wide blue eye, one might think it’d be difficult to find Ciel anything other than utterly adorable. And indeed, in younger days Ciel all but oozed sweetness and innocence. Sadly, the events of his past have rendered such naiveté from his eyes, as well as his aura. He may look a child, but he carries himself as someone far older: when he is not frowning, he generally wears a condescending smirk. His right eye remains narrowed in distaste. And his right eye, hidden from the world by a leather patch, bears the lilac mark of the devil—a pentagram that symbolizes the contract he’s entered into with his demonic butler, Sebastian.
But until the day Sebastian is allowed to feast upon his soul, one of the butler’s many tasks is to dress his master: Ciel is kept neat and presentable in a wide array of Victorian styled shorts and suit tops, complete with ribbons and cravats and knee-socks. Occasionally he has been known to don outfits “Lolita” in nature, or even to cross-dress if it helps him get what he wants. No matter what the occasion, though, he always has at least three things upon his person: a pair of small blue earrings (perhaps mementos from his mother), and two family rings. One, gold, circular, and with a flat head, bears the crest of his family; he wears it upon the middle finger of his right hand. The second is a fragment of the Hope Diamond, a symbol of his duties to the queen. That he wears upon his left thumb.
Personality; Back before the mysterious death of his parents, Ciel Phantomhive was a playful, cheerful, and kind-hearted child. But childhood doesn’t last forever, and Ciel’s was depressingly short: on his tenth birthday, his parents were murdered, his mansion burnt to the ground, and Ciel himself was kidnapped by a band of occultists. After a month of starvation and torture, Ciel’s personality had warped almost beyond recognition; when a demon appeared before him and promised salvation, the boy accepted without hesitation, and ordered the deaths of those who had been planning on making him a sacrifice. There was no hesitation, or pity, in his decision; he had long-since turned his back on God, and the morals of man. Since then, he has come to view life as a game of chess, and until he can utter the words “checkmate,” he will make his own rules and fight with every pawn in his possession.
In short, he lives for revenge. Not revenge for his parents (as he himself says, vengeance will not bring the dead back to life), but for himself, and for what was done to him. That anger, bitterness, and hatred has shaped him into who he is today. It is what dictates his every decision, and his emotions have only grown more vehement with time. This is, perhaps, due in part to his associations with his butler, Sebastian. Despite his insistence otherwise, Ciel is still a child, and has the same tendencies of all children—including the desire to please and prove himself to those he looks up to. It is unsurprising, therefore, that a boy who is effectively being raised by a demon would only grow more vicious with age; it does not help that Ciel only views his life as a tool for retaliation—that without his vendetta, he believes he would be nothing, and no one.
Yet, despite all of this, fury and rage have not yet managed to completely quash all that had once been. Though it is an incredibly rare occurrence, Ciel has been known to offer a genuine laugh or smile. He still loves games, though his fondness for them has become somewhat twisted. He also had maintained a child-like love of sweets, and has told others that he keeps Sebastian around because he makes the best sweets he has ever tasted. He has a soft spot for his younger cousin, Elizabeth—his fiancée and childhood friend. Though he finds her girlish tendencies and love of cute things tiresome, he understands that she means well. He appears to apply the same sentiments to his three servants, Maylene, Finny, and Bard, who are absolutely helpless at their respective jobs. Nevertheless, either through pity or affection or some instinct to protect those he perceives as “weaker” than himself, he keeps them on. In the same vein, he has also been known to host parties for orphans, give jobs to those who need them, and send baby toys to pregnant widows.
“Weakness,” of course, is a relative term; in light of what happened to him, Ciel has come to interpret “weakness” as “any emotion that I felt or outwardly expressed before my 10th birthday.” Ironic, perhaps, in that it only shows how much of a child the young count truly is, to believe that any form of positive emotion is a “weakness.” All the same, he has long-since conditioned himself to conceal all forms of kindness and concern with a mask of apathy, and is quick to correct anyone who accuses him of graciousness. It doesn’t help that the one who most often comments on Ciel’s “kindness” is Sebastian, and from the mouth of a devil the word generally isn’t a compliment. This further fuels Ciel’s attempts to kill any humanity left within him, as well as his strange (and perhaps subconscious) attempts to impress his butler with his coldness. And thus everything comes full-circle.
Abilities/Strengths; Ciel, as the Queen’s guard dog, is both intelligent and brave. He is not afraid to play the bait in his own traps, and has managed to solve great numbers of supernatural mysteries all while simultaneously running the country’s number one toy-making factory. He possesses a quick wit and an articulacy that has been known to startle even the most eloquent of adults. He has also show great skill in hunting, and has been known to keep a gun upon his person, as well as under his pillow. But perhaps his most noted strength is one that he has only just barely begun to notice and utilize: his appearance. He has an aura that attracts people to him, and a tendency to bring out the protective side of others. After all, people figure, how much harm could a cute, fragile little boy really do?
Weaknesses; Despite his impressive cleverness, cunningness, and abilities to plan and execute traps, Ciel is virtually helpless without Sebastian. As in, he can’t even get himself dressed. Due to his small statue, Ciel is easily overpowered, captured, or generally taken down. (In the series, he is chloroformed more than once.) He also has a tendency to keep a lax guard, even in dangerous situations, as he expects Sebastian to fully protect him. In addition, due to his tendency to see all of life as a game, he sometimes misreads situations, or puts too much faith/trust in one "piece" (AKA person). He expects everyone to follow by his rules, and, though he manages to pull through in the end, he is occasionally thrown for a loop when made to personally intervene in a situation. (He is very much a strategizer, rather than a player in the action.)
History; Ciel Phantomhive was born December 14th, 1875, to the previous Earl of Phantomhive and his wife, Rachel. He was raised in a glorious mansion filled with toys and laughter and happiness, and spent most of his young life playing with his dog, Sebastian, his young cousin Lizzie, his mother and father, and his Aunt Angelina. Like most noble children, he wanted for nothing. And now, looking back, he knows that—if things had continued as they had—he probably would have ended up hopelessly spoiled.
But he didn’t. Because everything changed on his 10th birthday: his mother and father were killed, the mansion burnt, and Ciel found himself in the custody of occultists. He spent a month shackled in a cage, half-starved and wondering why no one was coming to save him. As he was tortured, as he was branded, as he was set on an altar to be sacrificed, he continued to wonder—and then he realized that there was no such thing as heroes. There was no such thing as “God.”
There was, however, a devil. And the devil offered to save him, and serve him, in exchange for his soul. Ciel accepted without pause, and in this way saved himself. He named his newly acquired demon “Sebastian,” and fashioned him into a butler. Using his powers, Sebastian reconstructed Ciel’s old home from its former ashes, and Ciel took control of the Phantomhive family: reasserting the power of the Phantom company, reestablishing the Phantomhive’s role as the guardians of London’s underground, and generally making a show of his reappearance on the scene. It is his hope that those who first tried to break him and his family will see his power as the taunt that it is, and come back to try and kill him again. Only this time, with Sebastian by his side, Ciel will be ready—and he will finally reap the vengeance he craves.
Since returning to his reconstructed manor, Ciel has kept himself busy in a wide array of fields. During the day, he manages the Phantom Company, overseeing the manufacturing of toys and candy. In the name of the company, he also (when forced to) attends parties, and hosts banquets for orphans, etc. At night, the queen and the London Underground are his main priorities: he solves whatever mysteries and problems the queen brings to his attention. Most notably, he brought the Jack the Ripper case to a close, at the cost of his aunt's life. He also solved a case involving strange beatings in London (a case that, in the end, got him involved in a curry cooking competition and won his company a royal warrant, as well as the friendship of an Indian prince, Soma, and his butler, Agni), and is currently investigating a mysterious string of kidnappings that follow a traveling circus.*
(*This is the current manga arc, and is as of now unfinished.)
Third-person sample; There were a number of things about this situation that annoyed him. Obviously, the fact that he appeared to be lost was rather grating. As was the fact that he couldn’t remember why he was here in the first place, or what he’d been doing before he arrived. It didn’t help matters that everyone around the fifteen-year-old seemed completely unaware of him and his demands; within the first few minutes of attempted human contact, Ciel gave up, his sour mood curdling into an expression of frustrated fury. And to make matters all the worse, it was raining.
With everything else that was going on, one might think that the rain would hardly seem worth mentioning, but Ciel found it the most irksome thing about his situation. Because when one was lost, cold, hungry, and confused, adding rain to the mix was like pouring salt on a wound. Adding insult to injury. That sort of thing.
He sneezed once, brushing soggy locks of slate-colored hair out of his usable eye. Around him, the oblivious townsfolk bustled quickly back and forth, tromping through puddles with such speed and vigor that they inadvertently created little waves, each of which invariably managed to crash into the spectral boy’s drooping knee-socks and soak him further. His blue velvet suit was completely ruined.
“Of course,” the young Earl spat through gritted teeth, arms curled around himself as he huddled beneath the canopy of a small shop. “I’m ethereal enough that people can’t see me, but corporal enough to be tortured by the elements. Fantastic.” He knew there was a reason he hated God.
Wait.
Ciel frowned, snuffling quietly as a thought occurred to him. Due to the accumulation of mucus in his mind, the thought wasn’t as eloquent as he was used to, but it got its point across: hated God… sold soul to devil… couldn’t be dead. If he was dead, he wouldn’t be conscious of it, seeing as how his spiritual energy had already been promised to a hungry demon. Therefore, this wasn’t Hell—this was just some other world. Or plane. Or place. Or something. The terminology didn’t matter; the important thing was it ultimately meant that he was (perhaps surprisingly) still alive. It also meant that he might be able to find Sebastian, who would surely be able to see him, even if no one else could.
And if he could manage that, then Ciel would be able to order his servant to find him some place to stay. Some place without rain or puddles.
Or, if nothing else, he could steal his butler’s coat.
First-person sample; It’s been quite some time since I’ve gotten a new toy.
For that’s what I’ve decided it is. Or what I am turning it into, rather; I find it more interesting that way. This device is a toy. And the task of figuring out how to use it is a game. It’s an intriguing device, whatever it is: glossy and heavy and study, yet not made of metal. Obviously not stone, either. What it is made of remains a mystery. A related mystery: how to use the blasted thing. The fact that it contains rows of little buttons covered in alphabet letters has led me to conclude that this is some sort of communication device, but I’ve yet to determine how to work it. Or rather, how to work it properly—it’s on right now, its screen bright and its buttons glowing. Sometimes it even makes sounds; I’m half sure I can hear voices coming from the device. So perhaps it’s like a telephone, as well?
Perhaps if I use these keys…
In any case, it won’t take me long to figure out how to work this ‘Cross.’ The Phantom company has made baby toys more complicated that this trinket. It’s only a matter of time… and I can be very patient, when I want to be.
